NTSE status (checked 15 October 2026): NCERT has not conducted the National Talent Search Examination since the 2021 cycle. Its notice states that the National Talent Search Scheme was approved till 31 March 2021, and that further implementation of the scheme in its present form has not been approved and has been stalled till further orders. No NTSE 2026 notification has been issued. The details on this page come from NCERT's last official NTSE information brochure and are given for reference only.

Key Takeaways

  • Awardees needed 60% aggregate (or equivalent grade) every year.

  • Only full-time, approved courses in India were covered.

  • Holding another scholarship or a salaried job at the same time was not allowed.

  • A one-session gap or failing core subjects could end the scholarship permanently.

NTSE Scholarship Conditions

An NTSE scholarship was not automatic for every year. NCERT's brochure laid down clear rules on marks, attendance and conduct that students had to meet to keep receiving it.

Conditions to keep the NTSE scholarship: 60 percent marks, full-time study, one scholarship, no breaks

Academic Performance

  • Awardees needed at least 60% aggregate marks or an equivalent grade each year.

  • Falling short in one year meant losing that year's payment; falling short in two years ended the scholarship permanently.

  • Core subjects had to be passed in the first attempt.

Attendance and Leave

Absence without approved leave could lead to discontinuation. Medical leave was generally the only leave with scholarship: full scholarship for up to two months, half for the next two months, and none beyond four months in a year.

Course and Study Rules

Rule

What it meant

Full-time study

Only full-time courses at approved institutions in India

One scholarship

Awardees had to choose between NTSE and any other scholarship

No salaried job

Holding a salaried job during the scholarship was not allowed

No break

A gap of one academic session discontinued the scholarship, which could not be revived

Good conduct

Certified by the institution

Important Points

  • Keep mark sheets from every year; they were needed for claims.

  • Inform your institution early if you need medical leave.

  • Choose your course knowing which levels the scholarship covered.

Pro Tip: Treat 60% as a floor, not a target. A small dip in one year could cost a full year's scholarship.
