Day / Phase

Main Focus

GATE 2027 Key Activities

Do's

Don'ts

4-7 Days Before

Topic-Wise Revision

Focus exclusively on revising short notes, formulas, and high-weightage topics. Prioritize solving Previous Year Questions (PYQs).

Study hard and revise important concepts. Check previous years toppers tips.

Do not panic since just a week is remaining. Do not start completely new topics if you have left something to prepare.

2–3 Days Before

Quick revision + Mock + Analysis

Revise short notes, formula sheets, and error log. Solve 1 full-length mock (same time slot as actual exam). Analyse mistakes deeply. Revise Aptitude + Engineering Mathematics. Glance through the most repeated PYQ concepts.

Keep study sessions short (1.5–2 hrs) + take breaks. Practice virtual calculator usage. Stay hydrated and eat light, familiar food.

Do not start new topics or deep-dive into weak subjects. Avoid heavy studying after 8–9 PM. Don't compare ranks/marks with others.

1 Day Before

Final touch + Mental preparation

Only skim formula sheet, short notes, key theorems/relations. Revise common formulas, units, and shortcuts for numericals. Quick glance at the error log and repeated mistakes from mocks. Plan exam-day logistics: admit card, ID, exam centre route, and what to carry.

Keep your mind calm and positive. Visualise attempting paper calmly. Eat a light dinner, avoid heavy/oily food.

Completely avoid opening books in the afternoon/evening. Don't watch motivational videos or discuss paper patterns late. No all-night study or last-minute cramming.

Exam Morning (3–4 hours before leaving)

Stay fresh + Light activation

Quick 30–45 min glance at formula sheet or very short notes. Reach center 45–60 min early.

Stay calm, breathe deeply if nervous. Trust your preparation. Positive self-talk: "I know enough to do well".

Avoid last-second revision in the car/bus. Don't panic if you feel blank initially — it usually passes.

GATE 2027 Preparation: Most Important Points for the Final 2–3 Days

  • Stop learning anything new, even if you feel guilty. New learning at this stage will do more harm than good.

  • Take care of your sleep. Poor sleep results in slower calculation speed and increased silly mistakes.

  • Give utmost importance to Aptitude & Math – many students lose 12-25 easy marks here because of overconfidence or rust.

  • Stop trying for 100% perfection in mocks at this stage – focus on time management and avoiding negative marking.

  • Avoid social media/rank talk – it will increase your anxiety levels.

  • Exam room attitude: Read question completely → attempt easy/known ones first → don’t get stuck on a question for more than 2-3 minutes → mark for review.

GATE 2027 Preparation: Mistakes to Avoid in last Few Days

You can check the video by “GeeksforGeeks GATE”. The video explains common mistakes to avoid in the final 7 days of GATE preparation, including what not to study, revision mistakes, mock test errors, time management issues, and exam-day blunders.

GATE Preparation 2027: General Tips and Tricks

The strategy for GATE preparation is subjective and based on one’s abilities and limitations. We have mentioned some of the strategies suggested by previous years’ GATE toppers for the best exam output.

  • Start Early

    • While drafting your routine, analyze the time and number of days required to complete each topic;

    • Create a list of all the important topics in order to the levels of difficulty and number of sub-topics. This is to ensure that you are able to allocate the right preparation time to all the topics;

    • Stick to the preparation strategy throughout your preparation.

  • Understand Concepts

    • Strengthen your concepts for each topic

    • Prepare short notes of important points, formulas and concepts;

    • Make it a habit to go through these short notes for a quick revision before starting with your GATE preparation each day.

  • Gather the Best Study Resources

    • Select proper material to study. This can include books, modules, online references, articles, videos, etc. which explain the entire topic in great detail in a simple yet effective manner so it can be easily understood;

    • The candidate can allude to online videos for help like the NPTEL and offline resources like the notes from the previous years’ toppers.

  • Use Flashcards

    • The concept of flashcards is really simple; it requires jotting down all the difficult concepts on cards or sticky notes etc. which can be easily referred to and carried anywhere for revision;

    • This helps you to retain the difficult topics and formulas.

  • Revision

    • It is recommended that you dedicate atleast an hour for revision everyday. This will help you retain everything you have studied a day before in a better way;

    • Many toppers have also revealed that their preparation strategy included keeping 2 or more days in a week aside entirely for revision.

  • Solving Mock Tests/Sample Papers/Previous Years’ Question Papers

    • Appear for various mock tests from the beginning of your GATE Preparation. Each year GATE conducting body releases the official GATE Mock Test.

    • The official GATE Mock Test is a replication of the actual GATE question paper. It helps the candidates in getting an overview of the actual question paper, helping them with their problem-solving capabilities within the assigned time limit.

GATE Question Paper

Tips to Remember During GATE Preparation 2027

Here are some last revision tips for productive last days before the exam:

  • Stick to what you’ve read: If you are done with a considerable portion of your course, then try to avoid any new topics for now. If the topics are important, then exceptions can be made but retaining a lot of last minute information can hamper your revision.

  • Mock Tests are a must: Take a full mock test everyday and analyze it. Identify your strengths and weaknesses and work on them. Time management is one of the most crucial factors for success in such competitive exams, regular mock tests will result in better speed and accuracy.

  • Formulas and Notes: Don’t rely on too many resources, reading from multiple sources may result in confusion and stress. Stick to your notes and highlights. Skim over the important formulas once everyday, so that you have them on your tips during application.

  • Keep your exam day strategies ready: Candidates should have a clear understanding of how many questions they need to attempt for a desired score. The paper has a negative marking so randomly attempting questions isn’t a feasible option. Strategies like what type of questions to attempt first, question wise time limit etc prove to be really helpful during the paper. Candidates should be able to mould their strategies as per the question paper, as the exam can be full of surprises. There is no sectional time limit so candidates should have an idea of what sequence to take and how much time to devote to a particular section.

  • Numerical Value Based Questions: During the paper, candidates should try and attempt the numerical answer value based questions as there is no negative marking for the same.

  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle: Most candidates neglect keeping a healthy diet and timely sleeping but it is crucial for a higher concentration level during the paper and it can’t be achieved in a single day. Candidates should keep their lifestyle as per a healthy schedule so that they can effectively implement all their strategies.

How to Prepare for GATE exam from 1st year?

To prepare for GATE from 1st year of graduation, students must prepare a long-term study plan, keep preparing General Aptitude alongside the GATE core subjects, and Engineering Mathematics.

  • Check GATE Syllabus and Gather Study Material: Students must analyze the GATE syllabus and exam pattern and collect relevant and subject-specific study material to begin the GATE preparation.

  • Clear Basics: Students must focus on the basic concepts of the topics included in the GATE syllabus right from the start of GATE preparation.

  • GATE Aptitude: Keep practicing the GATE Aptitude syllabus, like Reasoning, Aptitude, etc., as it covers 15% of the GATE syllabus.

  • Learn Higher Concepts: Slowly start learning the higher concepts of the core subjects of your GATE test paper, and make short notes for quick revision.

Solve PYQs and Mock Tests: During the last year of their graduation, aspirants must solve previous years’ papers and take mock tests to improve accuracy, time management, and speed.

GATE Virtual Calculator: How to Use and Why?

The fact that physical calculators can’t be used during the exams makes it evident that you need to learn to use an online virtual calculator. While there is not much difference between the online virtual calculator and the physical calculator, getting familiar with the online virtual calculator can make things easier during the exams. Being used to it before the exam really makes it important for the candidates to get used to online virtual calculators.

  • Aspirants can simply use the GATE Virtual Calculator provided at the side of the screen on their computers.

  • The online scientific calculator helps candidates solve problems quickly. They don’t need to write down the numerical values on the paper every time to calculate; they just have to solve them on the screen.

  • This Online scientific calculator will be available for all candidates attending GATE (i.e., the same calculator for all).

  • In the case of physical calculators, some candidates have more functioning calculators than others. The virtual calculator ensures no candidate has an unfair advantage.

  • This method also helps candidates whose physical calculator stops working during exam time and those who forget to carry their scientific calculator to the exam center.

Features of GATE Virtual Calculator

  • The right side of the virtual calculator contains all the keys for simple operations, while scientific calculation keys are on the left-hand side.

  • There is no need for a shift key and inverse key as inverse functions have separate keys.

  • All function keys are grouped together.

  • Candidates need not press SHIFT or INV keys since the inverse functions have separate keys.

  • Trigonometric functions and Hyperbolic functions are grouped together.

  • The inverse functions are placed below the respective functions.

  • At the top of the virtual calculator, two display boxes are provided. The top box indicates the sequence of the keys pressed during calculation for reference.

  • The second box indicates the actual values entered or obtained after calculations.

Instructions for Using GATE Virtual Calculator

GATE Virtual Calculator: Do’s

  • Be sure to press [C] before starting a new calculation.

  • Use the predefined operations such as p (Pi), log, Exp to save time during calculation.

  • Use the memory function for calculating cumulative totals, as listed below:

    • [M+]: Will add displayed value to memory

    • [MR]: Will recall the value stored in memory

    • [M-]: Subtracts the displayed value from memory

  • Be sure to select the angle unit before beginning any calculation. (Note: By default, the angle unit is set as degree).

GATE Virtual Calculator: Don'ts

  • Do not perform multiple operations together.

  • Do not leave parentheses unbalanced.

  • Do not change the angle unit while performing a calculation.

What are the Limitations of GATE Virtual Calculator?

  • The output for a factorial calculation is limited up to 14 digits.

  • The keyboard operation will be disabled.

  • The output for Logarithmic and Hyperbolic calculations is limited up to 5 digits.

  • Modulus operation performed on decimal numbers with 15 digits would not be precise. Use mod operation only if the number comprises less than 15 digits.

  • The range of values supported by the calculator is $10^{-323}$ to $10^{308}$.

Practice GATE Virtual Calculator

Candidates must practice the calculation on a virtual calculator before the exam so that they will be familiar with the use of the same.

  • This online virtual calculator will be a part of the online test system for GATE.

  • Candidates must start the use of the online Virtual Calculator as soon as possible.

  • Candidates must know that they will not be allowed to carry a calculator with them to the examination hall for the GATE examination.

  • Candidates are advised to get sufficient practice on this virtual calculator so that the GATE examination proceeds without a hitch.

  • Make sure that you familiarize yourself with all its aspects and functions.

  • Pick up speed and learn where all the keys are placed so that they are not new for you on the day of the exam.

Examples of Calculations Using GATE Virtual Calculator

  • Arithmetic Calculations: To calculate $70 + 55 \times 85$, candidates must enter: 70, +, 55, *, 85, =

  • Function value: To calculate $2 + \log(60) \times 10$, candidates must enter: 60, log, *, 10, +, 2, =

  • Sin, cos, tan Calculations: To calculate $\sin(25)$ or $\cos(25)$ or $\tan(25)$, candidates must enter: 25, sin or cos or tan

Download GATE Virtual Calculator App

Candidates can easily download the GATE Virtual Calculator Application on their mobile phones by visiting the Play Store on Android Phones, whereas it can be found on the App Store in devices running iOS.

  • After downloading the application, you can use it not only for practicing calculations but for various other helpful features.

  • You can check the detailed syllabus of all the subjects from this application.

Know your GATE Exam Pattern before Using Virtual Calculator

GATE will be a 3-hour computer-based test where candidates will have to attempt 65 questions carrying 100 marks. 10 questions will be asked from General Aptitude which are common to all papers, while the remaining questions are from the paper opted by the applicant. The exam pattern for all 25 papers consists of both multiple-choice questions and numerical-type questions.

  • Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ): These questions are objective in nature, and each will have four answers, out of which the candidate has to mark the correct one.

  • Numerical Answer Questions (NAQ): For these questions, the answer is a real number, to be entered by the candidate using the virtual keypad. No choices will be shown for these questions.

  • Multiple Select Questions (MSQ): These questions are objective in nature. Each question will have a choice of four answers. Out of which, one or more than one choice(s) are correct. However, there are no partial marks awarded for choosing partially correct combinations of choices or any single wrong choice.

  • There will be no negative marking in NAT and MSQ questions.

  • For questions carrying 1 mark each, 1/3 marks will be deducted as a penalty for marking the wrong answer.

  • For questions carrying 2 marks, 2/3 marks will be deducted for marking an incorrect answer.

  • As per the exam paper pattern, 15% weight of marks will be given to Engineering Mathematics for the paper codes AE, AG, BT, CE, CH, CS, EC, EE, IN, ME, MN, MT, PI, TF, XE whereas 15% to General Aptitude and the remaining 70% to the subject paper.

  • For paper codes AR, CY, EY, GG, MA, PH, and XL the General Aptitude section will carry 15% of the total marks and the remaining 85% of the total marks are for the subject paper.
