What Is UGC NET?
UGC NET is designed to assess candidates' teaching aptitude, research aptitude and subject-specific knowledge. It is particularly important for postgraduate students and researchers planning academic or research-oriented careers.
The examination has three qualification categories:
1. Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and Assistant Professor: Candidates qualifying under this category become eligible for JRF consideration and Assistant Professor eligibility, subject to applicable UGC rules and other requirements.
2. Assistant Professor and PhD Admission: This category provides eligibility for Assistant Professor appointments and admission to PhD programmes, but not for the award of JRF.
3. PhD Admission Only: Candidates qualifying under this category can use their NET performance for PhD admission according to the applicable regulations, but the category does not provide JRF or Assistant Professor eligibility.
Universities and higher education institutions apply their own admission and recruitment procedures within the applicable UGC regulations.

UGC NET 2026 Eligibility Criteria
Candidates applying for UGC NET should meet the prescribed educational qualifications and age requirements for their intended qualification category.
Educational Qualification
Candidates who have completed a Master's degree or an equivalent recognised qualification generally need the following minimum marks:
Category | Minimum Master's Degree Marks |
|---|---|
General / Unreserved / General-EWS | 55% |
OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD/PwBD and Third Gender | 50% |
Candidates pursuing their Master's degree or awaiting final-year results may also apply provisionally, subject to the conditions and completion deadlines specified in the information bulletin.
Candidates with a four-year or eight-semester bachelor's degree may also be eligible for JRF and PhD admission under specific conditions. The minimum requirement is generally 75% aggregate marks, with the prescribed 5% relaxation for eligible categories. Qualification through this route does not make a candidate eligible for appointment as Assistant Professor.
Candidates should review the complete eligibility rules before applying.
Age Limit
For the December 2026 examination, the maximum age for JRF applicants is 30 years as of December 1, 2026, subject to applicable age relaxations.
There is no upper age limit for applying for UGC NET for Assistant Professor eligibility or PhD admission. Research experience, qualifying categories and other specified circumstances may affect JRF age relaxation.

UGC NET December 2026 consists of two compulsory sections conducted in a single three-hour session, with no break between the papers.
