JEE Advanced 2027

Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT)

What is JEE Advanced? The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced is a national-level entrance examination conducted for students seeking admission to IITs in India. The exam will be conducted in two mandatory papers: Paper 1 and Paper 2 on the same day in 2 shifts. Both papers will be conducted in CBT mode, consisting of 17 questions in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics respectively. After qualifying for this exam, admission to undergraduate programs in engineering and science at Top IITs, and also other institutes like IISc, IIPE, IIST, RGIPT, etc. Last year, among 2,50,000 JEE Main qualified candidates, only approx. 75% registered for the exam, and 54,378 candidates qualified for admission, among whom only 18,188 actual allotted seats were available at 23 IITs through JoSAA.

The detailed question structure and marking instructions are provided to candidates through the question paper and examination instructions. The official brochure specifically notes that negative marks may be awarded for some incorrect answers, so candidates should read the instructions for each section carefully.

Question Types

JEE Advanced uses different types of questions to test conceptual understanding and problem-solving skills. The exact number and distribution of question types can change from one examination year to another.

Previous official JEE Advanced papers have included formats such as:

  • Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ)

  • Multiple Select Questions (MSQ)

  • Numerical Answer Type questions

  • Matching List / paragraph-based questions

The official 2026 brochure does not prescribe one fixed question count or marking structure in advance; the marking details are displayed in the instructions available during the examination.

Computer-Based Examination

JEE Advanced is conducted only in Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode. Candidates answer questions using the computer system provided at the examination centre. They can navigate between sections and modify answers during the allotted examination time.

Candidates can also switch between English and Hindi during the examination.

Important Points for JEE Advanced 2027

Candidates should keep the following points in mind while preparing:

Both papers are mandatory. Missing either Paper 1 or Paper 2 means the result will not be prepared.

Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics are included in both papers.

Negative marking may apply to selected questions, so candidates should understand the instructions before attempting each section.

The final 2027 marking scheme should be checked in the official JEE Advanced 2027 brochure once it is published.
