A CSIR NET qualification is not tied to one college — it is a national eligibility that you carry to the institution of your choice. Here is where and how it can be used, as described in the official bulletin.

Where JRF Fellowships Can Be Held

As per the December 2026 Information Bulletin, Joint CSIR-UGC NET fellowships are accepted in:

  • Universities

  • Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs)

  • Postgraduate colleges

  • Government research establishments, including those of the CSIR

  • Research and development establishments of recognised public or private sector industrial firms

  • Other recognised institutions

Fellowships are tenable only in India, and the award is for a fixed tenure — it does not guarantee later employment with CSIR or UGC.

How Institutions Use CSIR NET

Use

What the rules say

PhD admission for JRF holders

Admitted to PhD through an interview, as per the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2022

PhD admission for Category 2 and 3

NET can be used as the entrance test in place of tests run by universities / HEIs; 70% weight to NET marks and 30% to the interview

Assistant Professor recruitment

NET (Category 1 or 2) is the eligibility; selection is done by the recruiting university or college

Research projects

JRF holders can also join suitable research schemes, governed by CSIR, UGC or project terms

Before You Apply to an Institute

  • Check the institute’s PhD admission notice — many publish separate calls for “NET-JRF qualified” candidates.

  • Confirm whether the institute accepts your NET subject for the PhD programme you want.

  • Keep your e-certificate / award letter ready — most institutes ask for it at the application stage.

  • Note that NET marks for PhD admission (Categories 2 and 3) are valid for one year.

Key Takeaways

  • JRF can be held at universities, IITs, PG colleges, CSIR and other government labs, and recognised industrial R&D units.

  • JRF holders are admitted to PhD through an interview.

  • Category 2 and 3 scores can replace university PhD entrance tests.

Pro Tip: Apply to several institutes in parallel. PhD admission calls for NET-qualified candidates open at different times through the year.
