Paper Analysis

Updated 8 October 2026Published 8 October 2026

CMAT 2027 (Common Management Admission Test) is expected to be conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in January 2027, in online computer-based test (CBT) mode across two shifts, following the same format as CMAT 2026. The exam is expected to cover five sections — Quantitative Techniques & Data Interpretation (QT&DI), Logical Reasoning (LR), Language Comprehension (LC), General Awareness (GA), and Innovation & Entrepreneurship (I&E) — with 20 questions per section, 100 questions in total, and a maximum score of 400 marks. Since the official exam date and schedule for CMAT 2027 are yet to be announced by NTA, this page presents expected difficulty projections, shift-wise analysis frameworks, and coaching institute insights based on CMAT 2026 and the preceding five years.

"CMAT has been one of the most consistent management entrance exams in terms of pattern and difficulty. Students who balance current affairs preparation with static GK, practise at least five to seven previous years’ papers, and build speed in LC and LR should be able to attempt 70–75 questions with 90%+ accuracy — the benchmark that top CMAT colleges expect." — Expert projection based on CMAT 2026 analysis and NTA result statistics

  • CMAT 2027 is expected to be conducted in online CBT mode, two shifts, with 100 questions across five sections carrying 400 marks.

  • Marking scheme: +4 for each correct answer, −1 for each incorrect answer; unattempted questions carry no penalty.

  • Based on 2023–2026 trends, Language Comprehension is expected to remain the easiest and most scoring section — short RC passages and direct vocabulary questions.

  • General Awareness is likely to be the toughest and most differentiating section, with a significant weight on static GK (History, Geography, Polity, Economy) alongside current affairs.

  • For CMAT 2027 current affairs, students should focus on events from approximately August–December 2026, alongside year-round static GK preparation.

  • Students targeting top CMAT-accepting colleges should aim for 70–78 accurate attempts — the proven benchmark across CMAT 2023–2026.

  • A score of 340+ out of 400 corresponds to the 99th+ percentile and is the threshold for JBIMS Mumbai — the most competitive CMAT-accepting institute.

Overall, CMAT 2027 is expected to continue rewarding balanced preparation and time management across all five sections. Based on CMAT 2026 NTA result statistics, historical trends, and coaching institute projections, the expected competitive score range for CMAT 2027 is 290–350 marks, corresponding to the 95th–99th percentile band.

CMAT 2027 Students’ Feedback and Overall Difficulty

Since CMAT 2027 has not yet been conducted, this section reflects expected feedback based on coaching institute projections, NTA result statistics from CMAT 2026, and the consistent difficulty trend from 2023–2026. This page will be updated with real-time student reactions, ground-level feedback, and shift-wise data immediately after CMAT 2027 is held. Based on past patterns, here is what students can anticipate:

  • The paper is expected to maintain an Easy to Moderate overall difficulty level, consistent with CMAT 2023, 2025, and 2026.

  • Language Comprehension will likely remain the easiest and most scoring section — short RC passages and direct vocabulary questions, completable in 20–25 minutes.

  • General Awareness is expected to have a heavy static GK component (History, Geography, Polity, Economy) — a trend firmly established since 2024.

  • QT&DI is projected to feature 2–3 DI sets alongside standalone arithmetic questions — Moderate difficulty, requiring careful time management.

  • I&E is expected to remain Moderate and concept-oriented, rewarding students familiar with the Indian start-up ecosystem and basic business frameworks.

  • Students who start with LC and LR before moving to QT&DI and GA are likely to manage time and accuracy most effectively.

260–310 marks

Business and start-up GK from work experience helps I&E; time management is the main challenge

Repeater (Second / Third Attempt)

Second / Third Attempt

Familiar with pattern; focused on accuracy over attempt count

300–345 marks

Pattern familiarity and strategy refinement typically push repeaters into 95–99+ percentile band

QT&DI Section Feedback

  • Arithmetic topics — Percentage, Profit & Loss, Time & Work, Speed & Distance — typically form 45–55% of the QT component, with straightforward standalone questions.

  • Data Interpretation sets include Bar Graphs, Tables, and Pie Charts, usually 2–3 sets of 4–5 questions each; multi-step calculations are the primary time consumer.

  • Geometry and Trigonometry questions have gradually increased to 2–4 per paper since 2021.

  • Students who attempt standalone arithmetic questions first and tackle DI sets later bank easy marks before committing time to lengthy data sets.

Logical Reasoning Section Feedback

  • CMAT’s LR section is more accessible than CAT LR — Syllogisms, Coding-Decoding, Number Series, and Analogies form the backbone and are quick to solve.

  • Blood Relations, Direction Sense, and Seating Arrangements appear regularly but are straightforward compared to equivalent questions in CAT or XAT.

  • Critical Reasoning (Assumption, Inference, Strengthen/Weaken) has been a small but consistent part since 2021 — 2–4 questions per paper.

  • Students who prioritise Series, Coding-Decoding, and Analogies in LR can finish the section in 25–30 minutes, leaving time for tougher arrangement questions.

Language Comprehension Section Feedback

  • RC passages in CMAT are typically 250–400 words long — significantly shorter than CAT passages — with direct inference questions and minimal abstract reasoning.

  • Vocabulary questions (Synonyms, Antonyms, Fill in the Blanks) are direct and reward regular readers — 4–6 such questions appear per paper.

  • Para Jumbles and Sentence Correction questions are straightforward — 3–5 combined per paper — and quick to solve.

  • LC is the highest return-on-time section in CMAT; most students complete it in under 25 minutes with 16–18 correct attempts.

General Awareness Section Feedback

  • Since 2024, CMAT’s GA section has had an increased weight of static GK over current affairs — students who prepare only current affairs are consistently caught off guard.

  • Indian History, Geography, Polity, and Economic History questions account for approximately 40–50% of GA in recent years.

  • Current Affairs coverage for CMAT 2027 is projected to span approximately August–December 2026, based on CMAT 2026’s October–December 2025 window.

  • Students must avoid guessing in GA — with −1 penalty, a wrong guess costs 5 marks (4 for wrong attempt + 4 for a correct question skipped = net −1 vs net +4).

Innovation & Entrepreneurship Section Feedback

  • I&E has maintained a Moderate difficulty level in all six editions since 2021 — the most stable section in CMAT in terms of difficulty.

  • Questions cover Bootstrapping, Venture Capital, Angel Investment, Design Thinking, Business Models, and Social Entrepreneurship — all at a conceptual and application level.

  • Scenario-based questions reward logical reasoning over rote recall — students with basic business knowledge and common sense do well without specialised preparation.

  • NCERT Business Studies (Classes 11–12) and reading about Indian start-ups (Zepto, Ola, Zomato, BYJU’s case studies) are the most effective preparation resources for I&E.

Attempt and Score Expectations for CMAT 2027

  • The proven benchmark: 70–75 attempts with 90%+ accuracy — recommended by all major coaching institutes, consistent with CMAT 2025 and 2026 topper profiles.

  • A score of 340+ out of 400 is expected to correspond to the 99th+ percentile and remains the threshold for JBIMS Mumbai — the most competitive CMAT-accepting institute.

  • For 95–99 percentile (strong admission prospects at KJ Somaiya, SIMSREE, PUMBA, XIMB), a score of 290–340 marks is the realistic target.

  • Negative marking is the biggest score suppressor in CMAT — a student who attempts 75 questions with 90% accuracy scores 243 net marks; a student who attempts 90 with 75% accuracy scores 247.5 but risks 22.5 extra negative marks with any accuracy slip.

Expert Reviews on CMAT 2027

Leading MBA coaching institutes will publish their detailed post-exam analysis of CMAT 2027 after both shifts conclude. Expert reviews and video analyses will be linked here on exam day. The following reflects pre-exam expert consensus based on CMAT 2026 analysis and decade-long trends:

On overall difficulty: CMAT coaching experts consistently project CMAT 2027 to remain Easy to Moderate — identical to 2025 and 2026. The paper rewards disciplined preparation and time management rather than extraordinary difficulty. Students who complete at least five previous years’ CMAT papers in full mock-test conditions are the best positioned to score in the 95+ percentile band.

On the GA section: Coaching institutes uniformly highlight GA as the unpredictable differentiator. Since 2024, static GK has overtaken current affairs in weight — students who prepare for CMAT as if it is a current-affairs-only exam consistently underperform in GA. TIME Institute’s post-CMAT 2026 review specifically advised future students to dedicate at least 40% of their GK preparation time to Indian History, Geography, Polity, and Economic History.

On the I&E section: Career Launcher and CracKu both note that I&E is the easiest section to improve with targeted preparation. Students who read about the Indian start-up ecosystem and study the Business Model Canvas framework typically score 11–14 in this section with minimal additional effort. This section disproportionately benefits students who keep themselves updated on business news.

On score strategy: IMS Learning Resources emphasises that 70–75 accurate attempts with 90%+ accuracy is the proven benchmark for a competitive CMAT score. "Do not attempt questions you are unsure about in GA and QT DI — the −1 penalty turns an uncertain guess into a 5-mark net loss, not a 3-mark gain," as noted in their CMAT 2026 post-exam report.

CMAT 2027 Expected Cutoff

The CMAT 2027 cutoff is the minimum percentile each participating college will announce for shortlisting students for GD-PI rounds. CMAT 2026 Paper Analysis

CMAT 2026 was conducted by NTA on January 25, 2026 in computer-based test (CBT) mode across two shifts — Shift 1 (9:00 AM–12:00 PM) and Shift 2 (3:00 PM–6:00 PM). The paper followed the five-section format — QT&DI, LR, LC, GA, and I&E — with 20 questions per section, 100 questions in total, and 400 maximum marks. 41,872 students appeared — approximately 15% fewer than CMAT 2025. Results were declared on February 17, 2026, confirming Easy to Moderate overall difficulty identical to CMAT 2025. Key highlights of CMAT 2026:

  • The exam pattern was completely unchanged from CMAT 2025 — 100 questions, 400 marks, –1 negative marking, no sectional time limit.

  • Language Comprehension was the easiest and fastest section in both shifts — short RC passages (250–350 words), direct vocabulary questions, completable in under 25 minutes.

  • General Awareness was the toughest and most differentiating section — dominated by static GK, with questions on Indian economic history, geography, and polity catching current-affairs-only preparers off guard.

  • QT&DI was the primary time challenge — 2–3 DI sets with multi-step calculations required careful time allocation.

  • NTA score distribution confirmed: 340+ marks = 99th+ percentile; overall average score was approximately 220–240 marks (60th percentile).

CMAT Paper Analysis Last 10 Years (2017–2026)

CMAT has maintained a broadly consistent difficulty profile over the past decade, making it one of the most predictable national MBA entrance exams in India. The four-section format from 2017–2020 was expanded to five sections with the addition of I&E from 2021. Key decade-level trends shaping what CMAT 2027 students can expect:

  • 2017–2020 (Four-Section Era): QT&DI, LR, LC, GA only. Rated Moderate most years; GA was already the most variable section; LC was consistently easiest.

  • 2021 (I&E Introduced): Innovation & Entrepreneurship added as the fifth section; I&E debuted at Moderate difficulty and has maintained it across all six editions since.

  • 2022 (Toughest QT&DI Year): QT&DI reached its peak difficulty of the decade — Moderate to Difficult — driven by complex DI sets and algebra questions; overall good attempts dropped to 65–70.

  • 2023–2026 (Stabilisation at Easy to Moderate): CMAT settled into Easy to Moderate overall, with LC remaining the easiest section every year and GA the most variable; good attempts stabilised at 65–78.

CMAT’s consistent difficulty trend over ten years makes previous years’ papers — especially from 2021 onwards when the five-section format began — the most reliable preparation resource. Students who complete five to seven timed CMAT mocks have a measurable advantage in time management and question selection on exam day.

Consistently Moderate across 9 of 10 years; sole exception was 2022 (Moderate to Difficult); DI sets (2–3 per paper) are the primary difficulty driver annually; arithmetic accounts for 40–50% of QT questions; Geometry/Trigonometry weight has risen from 2021 onwards

Logical Reasoning

Easy to Moderate in most years; Easy in 2019, 2021, and 2023; Moderate in 2017, 2018, 2020, 2022, and 2024; CMAT LR is consistently easier than CAT/XAT LR; Series, Analogies, Coding-Decoding are the highest-frequency and fastest-to-solve topics

Language Comprehension

Easiest section in every single year from 2017 to 2026, without a single exception; RC passages consistently short (250–400 words) and direct; vocabulary and grammar questions uniformly predictable; the highest good-attempt rate of all sections every year

General Awareness

Most unpredictable section across the decade; difficulty ranges from Moderate (2017–2019, 2021–2023, 2025) to Moderate to Difficult (2020, 2026) to Difficult (2024); static GK weight has increased visibly from 2023 onwards — a structural shift all 2027 students must account for in preparation

Innovation & Entrepreneurship

Introduced in 2021; Moderate in all six editions (2021–2026) without exception; the most stable section in CMAT in terms of difficulty; scenario-based and conceptual questions have remained the dominant question type since inception

CMAT QT&DI Analysis (2017–2026)

  • QT&DI has been Moderate in 9 out of 10 years — the only exception was 2022 (Moderate to Difficult due to complex DI sets and higher algebra weight).

  • DI sets (Bar Graphs, Tables, Pie Charts) have appeared in every CMAT paper since 2017, averaging 2–3 sets per paper.

  • Arithmetic topics (Percentage, P&L, T&W) account for approximately 40–50% of QT questions annually — the safest scoring area.

  • Geometry and Trigonometry questions have increased from 1–2 per paper (2017–2020) to 2–4 per paper (2021–2026) — a trend CMAT 2027 students must prepare for.
