Eligibility
Minimum Educational Qualification for Admission
Writing JAM is open to all graduates, but getting admission depends on the Minimum Educational Qualification (MEQ) set by each programme and institute. These are listed programme-wise in Annexure II of the JAM 2027 Information Brochure.
What MEQ Usually Covers
Subjects studied in the bachelor’s degree (for example, Physics and Mathematics for many Physics programmes).
Minimum marks or CGPA in the qualifying degree, where the programme specifies it.
Specific JAM paper that is valid for the programme.
Example from the 2027 Brochure
Some programmes specify minimum marks — for instance, certain IIT Kharagpur programmes (such as the Integrated Ph.D. in Sustainable Energy Engineering and Nuclear Medicine) require at least 60% in the qualifying degree, as per the brochure.
Disclaimer from JAM
The JAM website states that qualifying in JAM does not guarantee admission, scholarship or a job — admission depends fully on the admitting institute’s MEQ criteria.
Key Takeaways
MEQ is set per programme in Annexure II of the brochure.
It can include subjects, minimum marks and the JAM paper required.
Check MEQ before choosing your paper.
Pro Tip: Pick your JAM paper based on the MEQ of the programmes you want — taking the wrong paper can make you ineligible even with a high score.
