IELTS does not have a fixed academic qualification requirement. Candidates from different educational and professional backgrounds can take the test depending on their purpose, such as higher education, work, migration or professional registration. The required IELTS test type and minimum band score are generally decided by the university, organisation or immigration authority to which the candidate is applying.

Age Requirement

There is no general minimum or maximum age limit for IELTS in most countries. However, IELTS does not recommend the test for candidates under 16 years of age. For candidates under 18, additional arrangements or parental/guardian consent may apply depending on the test centre and location.

Educational Qualification

Candidates do not need to have passed Class 12, graduation or any specific degree to take IELTS. The test measures English-language proficiency rather than academic qualification.

However, the university or course you are applying to may have its own academic eligibility criteria, such as completion of Class 12, a bachelor's degree or a particular percentage. IELTS eligibility should therefore be considered separately from university admission eligibility.

English-Language Requirement

There is no universal minimum English proficiency level required to register for IELTS. Candidates can take the test to demonstrate their current English-language ability.

The required IELTS band score varies according to the destination, institution, course, profession or immigration route. Candidates should check the exact score requirement before booking their test.

Identification Documents

A valid identification document is required for IELTS registration and test-day identity verification. The exact accepted document requirements can vary by location. Candidates should check the requirements of their selected test centre before booking.
